Poetry and the Unquiet Mind – 9th Tow Tiang Seng Distinguished Lecture

March 22 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Poetry allows us to connect with and fully appreciate the depth of human feelings. Uncover the nuances of joy, sorrow, love, grief, ageing, and hope within poetic expressions. Join us to explore how it enhances mental resilience and soothes an unquiet mind.

In this talk, Prof Femi Oyebode will draw from the poetry of Juan Chi (210-263), Li Ling, Pao Chao (414-466), Kobayashi Issa, Ivor Gurney, Elizabeth Jennings, Stevie Smith and others. The session aims to illustrate how poetry allows us to connect with and fully understand the depth of human feeling and the delicate balance between sorrow, grief, and hope. The role of the humanities in medicine and psychiatry, in particular, cannot be underestimated.
